Carbon Trading: Market Opportunities for Agriculture Workshop

Tuesday, May 20, 2008         8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Workshop Objective and Overview

The objective of the workshop is to give agricultural educators a basic understanding of the complexities of carbon trading, while providing them with a set of tools to educate farmers and landowners about carbon trading.  The free workshop will explore the development and current status of the very complex and still changing carbon trading market.  Carbon trading is a method to reduce global carbon emissions by allowing market mechanisms to find the most cost effective way to reduce emissions from a variety of sources.

The workshop is being presented by Central New York Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. (CNY RC&D),with funding from Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NESARE).

 Workshop Locations

“Carbon Trading: Market Opportunities for Agriculture Workshop” will be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County office in Voorheesville, NY.   See http://www.ccealbany.com/ for directions.

 The workshop will also be broadcast to three remote sites;

Penn State Cooperative Extension Westmoreland County, Greensburg, PA http://westmoreland.extension.psu.edu/ for directions

Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center, University of Delaware, Georgetown, DE  for directions

http://www.rec.udel.edu/misc/contact.htm

University of New Hampshire Merrimack County Cooperative Extension in Boscawen, NH for directions

Register for any of the four sites at http://agcarbontrading.org

 Target Audience

This workshop is geared primarily to extension agents, soil and water conservation district staff, USDA staff and non-profit agricultural educators, and is open to landowners and farmers as well.  The workshop will include presentations by several experts including Introduction to Cap & Trade and Agricultural Offsets; Agricultural Practices and Carbon Offsets; Chicago Climate Exchange and Agricultural Offsets; Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative; Basic Do’s and Don’ts of Contract Law, and Carbon Credits and Whole Farm Planning.

 Resource Guide

Attendees will receive the Carbon Trading: Market Opportunities for Agriculture Resource Guide.  The resource guide includes modular Fact Sheets, and a CD-Rom of the Fact Sheets and Slide Presentations. These resources will also be available to attendees on the workshop’s web site.

According to Phil Metzger, USDA/NRCS Project Coordinator at CNY RC&D, “this information is critical right now.  We have designed this workshop and resource guide to give educators the tools they need to provide a basic understanding of this complex new market and allow them to better assist farmers. Our intention is that USDA, extension and other agriculture educators will use these resources to host workshops and information sessions for farmers and landowners in their own communities.”

Carbon trading is a very complex and is still fluid and changing. This workshop is designed to provide information about the issues that need to be considered before selling carbon credits / agricultural offsets. Attendees will have an opportunity to gain a good foundational understanding of the complexities involved, what further updated information to seek – and where to find it - in order to help farmers and landowners make an informed decision about carbon trading.

Funding for developing the materials and holding the workshop has been provided through a Professional Development grant from Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NESARE).

The workshop is free but limited to 100 attendees in Albany/Voorhesville and up to 50 attendees at the remote sites.   A travel stipend is available to a limited number of attendees who need to travel more than 200 miles round-trip to attend but will not be reimbursed by their employer.

Register to attend the workshop at any of the four sites at http://agcarbontrading.org
