Central NY RC&D was established October 1967 by
the US Secretary of Agriculture.
The CNY RC&D Council is at the heart of the RC&D concept.
The Council is a membership-based nonprofit entity that is
established and run by volunteers to carry out the mission of
the RC&D. The Council is composed of members that are key
community leaders in land conservation, water management,
environmental enhancement, and community development. They are a
steering committee and action team to implement the “Area Plan”,
a community-driven strategic long-range plan, to improve the
quality of life in the communities in the RC&D Area. The RC&D
Council members need to be
action-oriented volunteers
and leaders that help the Council address needs in the community
through good planning and project implementation. The Council
members represent the twelve counties of the CNY RC&D Area and
typically meet once per month to provide program over-sight and
direction.
The Council’s members manage the affairs of the
RC&D as an incorporated 501(c)(3).
What is CNY RC&D?
Central New York Resource Conservation
and Development Project, Inc., is a 501-C-3 not-for-profit organization,
located in Norwich, New York. The RC&D program is a USDA program,
administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, that supplies
federal support to the local CNY RC&D Council.
The People of RC&D
Ask people why they're involved
in RC&D and you'll get all kinds of answers. Some want to work with
environmental issues. Some are business people who want to use their
resources to help their communities prosper. Others bring assistance
from Local, State, or Federal government. But whatever their reasons
for being involved in RC&D, they have one thing in common--the desire
for better communities. The volunteer spirit, too, is alive and well
and living in the Nation's RC&D areas. Each year, RC&D receives
from its volunteers more than $30 million in contributions in time,
cash, materials, and grants.
Twelve counties
The CNY RC&D region covers
twelve counties; Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison,
Onondaga, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga, and Tompkins.
Local council representatives
CNY RC&D Council is made
up of representatives from twelve member County Legislatures and Soil
& Water Conservation Districts. Issues of Concern are identified
by the local Council, which then develop a long range plan with objectives/goals
to address identified problems/opportunities.
Funding
Funding and support is typically
obtained from federal (e.g. USDA-NRCS, Appalachian Regional Commission),
state (e.g. Empire State Development, NYS DEC), and county (e.g. County
Legislatures, SWCD's) sources, as well as from private foundations and
organizations (O'Conner Foundation, The Center for Agricultural Development
and Entrepreneurship - CADE, Inc.) supporting similar objectives
to those of CNY RC&D.
